The Circus ripped us off again!

Filed under: Samantha — Scott King at 11:22 am on Saturday, March 31, 2007

ptbarnum_1942_872218.jpgIf you remember, Samantha and I had a horrible time at the Circus. We were really upset about it and to try and make it up we ordered the DVD from Ringling Bros. Then yesterday she came over and we made circus food (Nachos, French Fries and more junk) and sat down to watch the DVD.

Well the DVD is a lie! It’s 20 minutes of rough cut footage. The actual circus is 2 hours long! No where on the DVD case or online does it say that the DVD is so damn short. It was a total rip off. The people that are on the cover of the DVD are barely in it or not in it at all!

So last night I called the 24 Hour Costumer Service for Ringling Bros. online store. I told the woman that I wanted to return the DVD because it was so short and that the website was misleading about it. The woman told me that it was non-returnable because it was open and that it wasn’t her problem. She then gave me the snail-mail address for Ringling Bros. headquarters and told me to write to them ((oddly enough its based like 45 minutes away which I had no clue)).

I spent this morning writing a 2 page letter about our whole circus experience and I’m mailing it off this afternoon. Hopefully I’ll get our money back for the DVD and then maybe even like FREE VIP seats to make up for all the garbage they’ve put us through.

300

After all the events in the past few weeks, Samantha and I finally saw “300.” Both of us liked it, though she laughed at several points because cheesy/lame things were said.

It seemed to me, the two biggest changes from the comic to the movie were good ones. The Queen was added to the movie and her storyline fit with the overall plot. And then the King was far less stoic in the film and more badass. I know the movie was set in ancient Greece, but the King was soooooo an American Action Hero in the movie. He just would make snarky comments or every now and then would give off an ancient-Jake-Bauer vibe.

Other than the over the top cheesy moments the only other problem I had with the film was the underlining message. I read the comic back in January so maybe I’m remembering wrong, but the movie just felt 10 times more political. How many times in the film was it mentioned that the King and Queen were fighting for freemen and all that jazz? It just felt like the filmmakers were beating a dead horse and overfeeding the theme. By the end of the movie it was way more an allegory about America and freedom than I remember the book being.

R.A. Salvatore’s Dritz and Forgotten Realms

Does anyone out there play Dungeon and Dragons? I won’t make fun of you if you do. I’ve NEVER played D&D before, but I could use the opinion of some D&D type people. You see I just started reading all of R.A. Salvatore’s novels. For those of you who don’t know, he’s the guy who created Dritz with the “Icewind Dale” trilogy. The books are set in the Forgotten Realms world which follows D&D rules.

So far I’ve read the “Dark Elf Trilogy” “Icewind Dale Trilogy” and the four part “Legacy of the Drow.” I’m just about to start “Paths of Darkness” and I’m struggling. The books are poorly written. There often isn’t a structure or overall plot. I don’t understand how these books can be as popular as they are nor do I understand how Salvatore was first published.

This is why I need a D&D person that is familiar with the novels. Can you please explain to me the appeal of the books? Are they popular just because D&D people like that they are novels that use D&D rules? Do people like me not understand not having structure but people like you enjoy it because that’s how D&D campaigns work? I just don’t get it and if anyone can explain it, please do.

Boston Marathon In Space

Filed under: News News — Scott King at 11:08 am on Saturday, March 31, 2007

vert.astronaut.ap.jpgSo the female astronaut stuck in space because of shuttle delays is going to run the Boston Marathon while in the space station. She’ll do it using a treadmill and bungee cords to strap her down.

But for next month’s Boston Marathon, the U.S. Navy commander will run the equivalent distance on a treadmill — 210 miles (338 kilometers) above Earth in the international space station, and tethered to her track by bungee cords so she does not float away.

“She thought it would be cool if she gave it a try,” said Williams’ sister, Dina Pandya, who will run the race the traditional way with almost 24,000 other runners. “She said, ‘I’ll call you on Heartbreak Hill.’ “

I understand how NASA can market this with press releases and make it sound really neat and cool. But HELLO! The woman is in Space! She’s weightless. I don’t care how many bungee cords are strapped to her, its completely different from running while on earth and having to carry your own body weight.

“7th” Heaven is sent to HELL! (Yep, its finally really canceled…again)

There is a God! And he hates the Camdens family as much as I do! As most of you loyal readers know, I truly began to loathe “7th Heaven” after The CW un-canceled it and canceled “Everwood” in its place. So I was soooooooo happy when I went to E! and read the following:

Folks, I just heard that after an astonishing 11 seasons, the Camdens are leaving us: 7th Heaven has been canceled by the CW. No official comment yet, but I’m told that the producers, cast and crew were informed by the network today. It’s a done deal.It was 7th Heaven that first introduced us to stars like Jessica Biel and What About Brian’s Barry Watson, and the family-friendly show was by far the biggest ratings getter on the late, great WB network. Reverend Camden, Lucy, our televisions won’t the same without you—but Happy the dog, I think I’ll miss you most of all!

Although I still morn “Everwood” I have to admit that without “Everwood’s” death, we wouldn’t have “Brothers & Sisters.” What? Oh you aren’t a TV slut like me and don’t understand. Ok so “Brothers & Sisters” started and filmed like two episodes. They were bad. The network fired the executive producer and asked the “Everwood” creator to run “Brothers & Sisters.” That’s why the show is so amazing and why we wouldn’t have it if “Everwood” was still on the air. PLUS at least now we still get to see Emily VanCamp on a weekly basis!

What? You’ve never seen the greatest Cable Access Show of all time? Well I guess you’ve never been to Ocean City. But don’t worry. Today is your lucky day. I’ve posted a full episode of “The Scott King Show.” It is episode 5 of the second season and called “Scott Gets a Date.”

A one minute clip of this episode is being inserted into “An American King” and I apologize for the video quality of the episode. There is a generation lost issue and compression issue. I’ll eventually get around to digitizing a better quality version but until then you can watch it here.

Also today is a “Scott and Samantha” day so blog will probably be quiet again till late tonight or tomorrow. But don’t worry I promise I’ll be making posts all weekend.

Remember Feedback from last year? He’s the guy who won. Well it turns out that his alter ego Matthew Atherton is an actor! He’s done “Malcolm in the Middle” “Special Unit” and “NCIS” mind you the rolls were all small parts, but it proves that he was most likely a SAG actor!

Its one thing to have real people who want to be actors on a reality TV show. It’s something completely different to cast actors and have them pretend to be real people. I understand most reality TV isn’t real, but this takes it too far. I wonder if I can sue?

Top Cow is now selling comic books through IGN Direct2Drive site. You can go there and pay a whole $1.99 for a pdf comic book. I’m sorry but I pay $1.99 for full episodes of TV shows on iTunes. Why would I pay that much for just a top cow digital comic? That’s ridiculously over priced. Specially when you consider that they aren’t paying for printing cost, paper, shipping and all that jazz.

“I nearly forgot — I took the keyboard I wrote most of Sandman on, not to mention many other things, and I signed it, and drew on it, and donated it to the Open Rights Group for their raffle. I find it difficult to imagine a world in which anyone would really want a battered old pre-Windows keyboard, even one signed and suchlike. But we may live in that world, and even if we don’t, it’s for a good cause…”

The “American Dream” is Dead

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 11:40 am on Friday, March 30, 2007

greatdream.jpg
“The Great American Dream Vote” was canceled.

The reason for the quick hook, as is usually the case with things like this, is anemic ratings. The show, hosted by Donny Osmond, debuted to an audience of about 5.9 million people Tuesday night. That’s not great regardless, but “Dream Vote” also squandered a lead-in audience of nearly 18 million people from the “Dancing with the Stars” results show.

I blame the bad ratings on the commercials that showed a guy who’s dream was to create a chicken heaven.

It seems the long awaited “X-Files” movie sequel may actually be made. A script was finished last year but legal issues between the shows creator and Fox were putting the movie on hold. However, David Duchovny told The IESB this week that “they were in final negotiations for the second X-Files film and should wrap this week. Plans are to start shooting next year or sooner.”

Deep Frying Fish Tank

Filed under: Technology — Scott King at 11:37 am on Friday, March 30, 2007

fishtank.jpg
This head-scratching contraption is a deep fryer combined with a fish tank, and no, it doesn’t only make fish sticks. The boiling oil sits right on top of the water that your fishy friends live in, but it doesn’t hurt the fish at all. Because oil and water stay separated, the oil floats on the top and the water stays cool enough for the fish to survive. The oily gunk then drips down to the fish, which they enjoy as a fat-filled diet. Therefore you don’t need to feed the fish or clean the fryer. Brilliant!

I just can’t even imagine coming up with something like this, but it’s nice to know that there’s someone out there crazy enough to think of such a diabolical creation.

Who Wants To Be A Superhero Scam

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 12:48 pm on Thursday, March 29, 2007

Wow I’m pissed. So it seems “Who Wants To Be A Superhero” was cast before the last three casting calls were held. Not only that but Sci-Fi has been hiring actual actors to be on the show.

Sci-Fi casted the show by posting on craigs lists and acting websites looking for SAG and non-SAG actors for the show. Here is a sample listing:

Casting Call : Who Wants to Be a Superhero
Company: Sci Fi Network
State: CA
Posted On: Feb 13, 07 Expires On: Mar 1, 07

Description:
We are looking for our Cast Hottie! You must be at least 18 and be available for shoot dates through April. You will be paid a weekly stipen, live in the mansion, as well as win a cash prize for this 2nd season, elimination show.

Please send one headshot, or close up photo, along with any LA Casting or Myspace.com links. Interest in comics, sci fi and fantasy and action films are a big plus. This show brings you a HUGE online presence as well as great material for your acting or hosting real. We welcome SAG and non-SAG actors.

I cannot link to post above because it was pulled. But here is another one that’s similar and another.

As to how I know the show was cast was filled before auditions were even completed? I sent a question to the casting office a day after my audition (before the rest of the location auditions were done) and received a reply saying “Thanks! Casting is done.”

Of course a lot of you have read blog posts or seen You Tube videos of people saying they were flown out to LA for a call back. These call backs are legit and they aren’t legit. They are legit in the sense that people were flown to LA but it was just so the show could have footage for the first episode. They needed random people being interviewed by Stan Lee.

So I’m pissed that “Who Wants To Be A Superhero” is all shadey. I know reality TV isn’t REAL per say, but at least most reality tv shows are legit. I don’t plan on watching this comming season.

Updated here with another post. It seems Feedback from last season was a SAG actor!

The Office: Modern Hyperrealism

If you are a fan of “The Office” and know what Hyperreality is, then you may like this paper I wrote for my Radical Image Class:

Modern Hyperrealism

A little boy awakes in his dimly lit bedroom to see a man in a tie sitting his rocking chair. The man, a total stranger, asks the child, “Who makes this chair?” Without showing any emotion the boy replies “I don’t know. It was here when I was born.” The mysterious man then asks if the chair is made of oak. The boy doesn’t reply.

The above scene is so surreal that it becomes real and is even more real than reality itself, which is why “The Office” is the perfect example of modern day hyperrealism. (Read on …)

Wanted Sequel

Mark Millar wrote “Wanted”, the graphic novel which is about to become a major movie with James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman and has posted in comments on his website, that he is “NEVER writing a sequel” to the comic. However it seems the film’s director Timur Bekmambetov “has an idea for a sequel based on these characters and ideas and they’re already making plans with the studio.”

Surprising news considering the first hasn’t even been shot yet. Millar also revealed that there are “four big names in this picture” with those three already released. The fourth is another big male star (to be) announced inside the next week or two.

Warren Ellis’ “Black Summer”

Warren Ellis has a new book coming out called “Black Summer.” From interviews and released photos it seems to have a political setting and theme and for some reason that bothers me.

Warren Ellis is NOT an American. Nor is Mark Millar. Nor is Alan Moore. Why is it that foreign comic writers seem to handle American politics/allegories better than American writers? Are Americans just not writing those kinds of stories? Are they too close to the source material that they can’t be subjective enough? I just don’t get it.

Jenna Fischer, who plays Pam on “The Office,” posed nude for the cover of WIRED.

“If you’re talking about transparency, the obvious metaphor is clear: you’re naked,” says Wired’s Creative Director. “So of course, Wired being Wired we wanted a cover that was smart and showy. And as Creative Director I wanted something that hadn’t been done before. We settled on the idea of printing on clear acetate. But it had to be interactive. Now you’re in a business suit—now you’re not.”

While Fischer isn’t actually naked, the raciness is a first for the magazine and has already started a wave of discussion across the web. The message to “Get Naked And… Rule The World” that I don’t take lightly, and I am certainly not alone. “It’s familiar boy’s club crap,” says Back In Skinny Jeans. “Yeah, just sex up the receptionist. Why didn’t you throw in the pot of coffee while you were at it? Naked women on business magazines is just wrooooong, and that’s why it’s never been done before by anyone with class.”

My Last Anna Nicole Smith Post

On Monday, Anna Nicole’s autopsy report was released to the public. What pissed me off was that all weekend long CNN and other news outlets were running stories announcing that the autopsy report would be announced. It reminded me of how shows like “Entertainment Tonight” spend MORE time telling you what will happen after the commercial breaks than they do actually telling you stuff. Its sad that the general state of mainstream journalism has become so pathetic. It’s all about ratings and selling papers and not about actual news. That’s why I HATE journalism and embrace fiction/storytelling.

Twitter: The Blogger’s Best Friend?

Twitter has become the ‘new thing’ in the past month. I’ve even got a profile. However I don’t think I’ll ever use it since I’d rather just make my own blog posts. But here is an article about it from Time:

If you ever fancied yourself a blogger but didn’t have the time or energy to post thoughtful or silly missives at regular intervals, a new service called Twitter could set your inner blogger free. While some people call it microblogging or moblogging, I like to think of Twitter simply as blogging for regular people.

Maybe you’re really busy. Maybe you don’t have much to say. Or maybe you’re just lazy. Not a problem. This free service works by letting you broadcast a group text message to your friends’ mobile phones from either your own phone, an instant message or an online form at twitter.com. All your notes are then stored and displayed on your personal profile page on the site, which includes links to your friends’ Twitter pages, a thumbnail picture of your choice, and a short bio. You can even send text updates directly to your MySpace page. Just remember to keep it short: posts are limited to 140 characters, and the topic is, invariably, “what are you doing?”

Emma Watson (Hermione) Quits Harry Potter Films!

Filed under: Books, Movies — Scott King at 10:52 pm on Sunday, March 18, 2007

emmawatson.jpg
Emma Watson, better known as Hermione Granger in the “Harry Potter” films, has decided not to sign up for the final two movies reports Digital Spy. The News of the World says that Watson has told producers that she wants to try other roles and turned down a new £2 million-per-movie offer.

A British tabloid report that can be dismissed right? Well not so easily. The paper claims that it has received confirmation from Warner Brothers that Emma has not signed up for the final films. On top of that they have a quote from actor Rupert Grint about the trio’s dynamic - “She’s tired of being known as ‘that girl from Harry Potter’. Daniel and I are distant from her now. We don’t text or talk to her when we are not filming”.

Of course, I won’t believe anything till WB confirms and the US press picks it up.

Wizard World LA = LAME

X-Men200color.jpg
Wizard World LA happened this weekend and there is TONS of exciting stuff to report on. …err wait. NOTHING exciting happened. So we are going to travel back in time to NYC-Comic-con and look at the two biggest stories from there.

X-men: Endangered Species
This is the HUGE X-men event of the year. It has 17 parts and will come out in a weekly basis, but will be structured more like “Annihilation” than lets say “52.” Mike Carey is over seeing the project and doing the largest amount of writing. It starts off in the “Endangered Species” one-shot, which will serve more as a prequel while the real event begins in “X-men” #200(the cover is above). I LOVE the X-men and this is the first time I’ve ever been excited about a crossover-event. I really hope Marvel doesn’t do something really lame with it.

Halo Ongoing
Marvel announced a Halo ongoing, naming Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev as the surprise creative team on the new series. No art has been released and no plot has been revealed. We don’t know if this will take place before, during, or after the games. We also don’t know if any of the regular Halo-characters will make it into the comic. For all we know it could just be set in the Halo Universe. Being a Halo-whore I’m really hoping to see Master Chief in it, but I know I’ll read anything put out by this team and be happy with it.

Okami

I finally used the store credit I gained months ago from trading in “Final Fantasy XII.” I picked up “Okami” and I’m shocked at just how amazing this game is. Its definitely in my top 5 of the greatest PS2 games of all time, and I’m only 10 hours into it!

It’s a basic RPG in that the world is in danger and you have to save it. The catch is that you’re a god trapped in the body of a wolf. Sure you can run fast, bite, and fight like a wolf, but you also have god-like powers. You use a weapon called the Celestial Brush and it literally lets you paint things into the world or directly affect its state, like changing night to day, causing the winds to rush, flowers to bloom, chopping down trees, restoring broken buildings, and tons of other stuff. It’s an awesome game and the most Zelda-like game I have ever played that was good and not Zelda.

“300″ Sequel

“300” ranked in another $30 plus million over the weekend and Variety is reporting that Frank Miller is now talking sequel! For obvious reasons, a technical sequel isn’t possible, but it seems Miller is thinking of doing another “300” based on another mythic tale from Greek history.

Which one though? Miller won’t say. He’s also busy in pre-production with the “Sin City” sequel (due to begin filming inn June), an adaptation of Will Eisner’s “The Spirit” and has comic commitments.

Heroes: New Episodes when???!!

So who else is going nuts over this 7 week break between new “Heroes?” The show has five episodes left and will air them starting April 23rd.

While your trying to deal with the withdaw make sure you check out Greg Beeman’s (one of the show’s producers) blogs who is answering fan questions. Including one from yours truly.

Scott King asks: How big is the production staff for HEROES compared to other shows? HEROES just feels so epic at times and it’s hard to believe that the average size crew and staff can do all it does.

HEROES is, indeed, bigger than most other shows. We have a writing staff, production office staff, a shooting crew, a post production team – which is what all shows have. We also contract out a company that does our visual effects and another company that does our prosthetic makeup effects. The main reason we’re bigger is that we frequently have two main units going at the same time. That means, two sets of trucks and trailers, two directors of photography, two make-up and hair teams, two caterers, two sound crews, etc. etc.

There have even been a couple of times when we had two main unit crews and an insert unit crew going. Bottom line the size of the crew varies… On our smallest days we employee 85-100 people and on our largest days about 300.

Want some big spoilers. Continue after the break. (Read on …)

It’s a sad sad day. Rumor has it that “Veronica Mars” has been canceled, though no official word has been confirmed by the higher ups at The CW or the show’s producers.

Hollywood Reporter says that The CW is looking to jump season four, four years into the future, when Veronica is studying at the FBI Academy. If this were to happen, we could lose a lot of the supporting cast that we have grown to love.

If the show returns for a fourth season in the fall, it might find the young sleuth in a different setting. “Veronica Mars” creator Rob Thomas has come up with an idea to fast-forward a couple of years and have Mars studying at the FBI Academy. (As a freshman at Hearst College, Mars (Kristen Bell) has been taking criminology classes and been looking to do an internship at the FBI.) Thomas is filming a trailer for the alternative fourth season of the Warner Bros. TV/Silver Pictures show, which will be submitted to the CW. The network’s executives ultimately will decide whether to pick up the series for another season and, if they do, whether to stick to the drama’s current plot line or go with the new version.

The whole jump-ahead-into-the-future-thing seems crazy. ‘Specially since “One Tree Hill” has been saying since last fall that if they are renewed that is exactly what THEY are doing. So it seems like The CW has ripped off the idea and might be forcing “Veronica Mars” to do it. Since we still don’t know what is true and what isn’t, Kristin at E! is trying to clear things up: (Read on …)

Cate Blanchett has signed on to star in the fourth installment of the “Indiana Jones” adventures says The Hollywood Reporter. David Koepp’s screenplay is being kept under wraps so it is unclear what character Blanchett will play, though sources indicate it’s a major role.

Harrison Ford already has boarded the project as well as, which will be produced by Lucasfilm and directed by Steven Spielberg. Rumor also has it that Shia LaBeouf is in talks to play Indy’s son. Shooting will begin in June in Los Angeles and at undisclosed locations around the world. The film will get a release on May 22nd 2008.

Ringling Brothers: The Worse Show on Earth

As a birthday gift, Samantha got us tickets to see Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. So last night we hit up Baltimore and were excited for the “Circus of Dreams.” It started and we found out that there was an overall narrative to it. It seems a “family from the audience” is picked to be in the circus to have their dreams come true. The father became the ringmaster. The wife a trapeze artist. The daughter a slut …errr I mean dancer. And Dan, the son, was on a quest to find his place in the circus.

Well Samantha and I never found out where Dan fit into the circus. You see the event was the worse event her and I have ever attended. We were forced to leave our seats and demand our money back! (Read on …)

Dad

Dad is out of the hospital. Of course it isn’t because he’s better it’s because he got in a fight with the doctors. They wanted to pull of his medications to see if it would fix one of his problems and he refused. So now dad’s home with pneumonia and with the yucky damp weather I’m really worried about him.

Grey’s Anatomy Spin-off Update

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 10:25 pm on Thursday, March 15, 2007

It’s been a few weeks since we checked in on “Grey’s 2.0” so I figured we should talk about all the casting that happened last week.

Right now we have Kate Walsh (Addison) as the lead with Tim Daly, Taye Diggs, Amy Brenneman, Chris Lowell, Merrin Dungey and Paul Addelstein rounding out the rest of the main cast.

The show will be set in Los Angeles and focus on plastic surgery and psychiatry. Rumor also has it that it will be very Nip/Tuck-ish in the sense that there is a LOT of sex.

The spin-off will premier in May as a two hour extended episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” and as long as ratings are decent it will continue next fall.

Gilmore Girls Ending?

Things are looking worse and worse for “Gilmore Girls” coming back. Ausiello recently posted that negotiations for another season have ended.

Now, regarding the small matter of the show’s “likely series finale,” all I can say is that you might want to start saying your goodbyes now. Talks to bring the show back for an eighth season have stalled, and, according to several sources, there’s little hope for a turnaround.

And it seems Melissa McCarthy (Sooki) has been picked up for “Sam I Am” a pilot at ABC.

Sam I Am” stars Christina Applegate as a woman with amnesia; McCarthy will play a former friend who reappears in her life. McCarthy is the first “Gilmore” regular to seek other work this pilot season.

Zack Snyder talks “Watchmen”

In the wake of the success of “300″, director Zack Snyder has become searingly hot property this week and he talked about his proposed plans for the “Watchmen” comic adaptation to Comic Book Resources:

When Is It In Production

I’m doing “Watchmen” next for sure. That’s what we’re focusing all our attention on…It’s the best thing out there. Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I feel like “Watchmen” is the coolest thing ever and I have to do it. (Read on …)
