Boston Marathon In Space

vert.astronaut.ap.jpgSo the female astronaut stuck in space because of shuttle delays is going to run the Boston Marathon while in the space station. She’ll do it using a treadmill and bungee cords to strap her down.

But for next month’s Boston Marathon, the U.S. Navy commander will run the equivalent distance on a treadmill — 210 miles (338 kilometers) above Earth in the international space station, and tethered to her track by bungee cords so she does not float away.

“She thought it would be cool if she gave it a try,” said Williams’ sister, Dina Pandya, who will run the race the traditional way with almost 24,000 other runners. “She said, ‘I’ll call you on Heartbreak Hill.’ “

I understand how NASA can market this with press releases and make it sound really neat and cool. But HELLO! The woman is in Space! She’s weightless. I don’t care how many bungee cords are strapped to her, its completely different from running while on earth and having to carry your own body weight.

YEAH! Send me into space - I’ll run all day. I’ll do TWO marathons. Bungie Cords - come ON! If she has to be held down it’s pretty obvious that all she’s doing is moving her legs around.
