Does anyone out there play Dungeon and Dragons? I won’t make fun of you if you do. I’ve NEVER played D&D before, but I could use the opinion of some D&D type people. You see I just started reading all of R.A. Salvatore’s novels. For those of you who don’t know, he’s the guy who created Dritz with the “Icewind Dale” trilogy. The books are set in the Forgotten Realms world which follows D&D rules.

So far I’ve read the “Dark Elf Trilogy” “Icewind Dale Trilogy” and the four part “Legacy of the Drow.” I’m just about to start “Paths of Darkness” and I’m struggling. The books are poorly written. There often isn’t a structure or overall plot. I don’t understand how these books can be as popular as they are nor do I understand how Salvatore was first published.

This is why I need a D&D person that is familiar with the novels. Can you please explain to me the appeal of the books? Are they popular just because D&D people like that they are novels that use D&D rules?? Do people like me not understand not having structure but people like you enjoy it because that’s how D&D campaigns work? I just don’t get it and if anyone can explain it, please do.

You know the Dark Elf series is in graphic novel form, don’t you?

  2. Scott King Says:

Yeah. I read the novel then read the 3 graphic novels in “B&N.” The same problems that were in the novel are partially in the comics.

I’ve always been a fantasy novel lover. Probbally because “Lion the Witch and Wardrobe” was the first book I ever read. So at this point in my life I’ve read or have at least tried to read EVERY major fantasy series. The only one I had never attempted was “Forgotten Realms.” But without anything good comming out in the past few months I finally decided it was time to learn about Dritz. mannnnnn what a waste.

From a true fan of the forgotten realms books maybe your putting to much expectation into the book forget structure and all the other nonsense a book is a written story shut off the logical side of your brain and read with your imagination there is alot of plot and story here and I don’t play Dungeons and Dragons I just love fantasy also partially credited to the Narnia Series being the first series I read all the way through but don’t be so critical take a hot bath or whatever you may need to do to relax and enjoy the book and just as a side note for something neither one of you enjoyed you both read alot of it!!
