52 Days of 52: Week 7

Filed under: 52, Comics, DC Comics — Scott King at 10:49 am on Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Remember how in week six I was complaining about Booster crossing the line? Well its nice to know that the writers have him paying the consequences already. Not only did he get ousted for being a con-artist but it was great to have Ralph Dibny (who we’ve not seen a few weeks) go to Booster for help and then when Booster didn’t help him he totally ripped Booster a new one in front of the media. So now everyone knows Booster has had some fraudulent rescues. (Read on …)

52 Days of 52: Week 6

Filed under: 52, Comics, DC Comics — Scott King at 12:48 pm on Tuesday, October 30, 2007

What the heck happened? Booster Gold has been a character I’ve really liked. He’s a fame-whore and it just makes sense to have a super-hero like that. But paying someone to dress up as a villain just so you can stop them for a publicity stunt? That’s crossing the line in my book. That’s just pathetic. And I’m not sure if I buy that the character would stoop that low. Which makes me think this only happened because the writers needed it to happen not because Booster would actually do it. ScottKing.info Turns 2!

Filed under: Me — Scott King at 12:23 pm on Monday, October 29, 2007

Today marks the two year anniversary of ScottKing.info. My little site-that-could has really started to come into its own. For starters, there are a lot of you out there who are regular readers and I love everyone of you! In the past year we had 143,782 hits. It’s still not super great numbers, but it’s solid and every month more new unique visitors show up. So I’m happy.

Another interesting factoid , is that in a year I’ve made 1,327 posts. That’s an average of 3.6 post a day or 25.5 posts a week. (Read on …)

Out of Town

I’m sorry, but I’m out of town and won’t be back till next Monday (it’s why I tried to make a whole bunch of posts today). The “52 Days of 52″ will automatically post while I’m gone and so will your Thursday “Halo” pic and Friday “Edit” pic. Hope you all have a great week and a Happy Halloween.

52 Days of 52: Week 5

Filed under: 52, Comics, DC Comics — Scott King at 11:32 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

This is the first issue to really only focus on one storyline. I’m mean sure you have a single panel-appearances of Booster Gold and Renee Montoya shows up for like 3 pages, but everything else in this issue is about the heroes who were in space at the end of “Infinite Crisis.” (Read on …)

Halo 3 on TV

Filed under: Halo, TV, Video Games — Scott King at 11:30 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

So far I’ve seen “Halo 3” on an episode of “Sarah Silverman,” “Chuck,” and “Desperate Housewives”

What I think is interesting to note is that “Chuck” really had the characters playing the game which means the episode was filmed after Sept. 21st. On the other hand, “Sarah Silverman” showed the characters playing the first “Halo” but they were calling it “Halo 3.” Meanwhile, on “Desperate Housewives” the characters were playing “Halo 3″ but simply called it a “Zombie Game.”

How do I know all of this? It’s because each of the Halo’s use different maps and different weapons. So having played all three it was simple to figure out which game was on which show (p.s. the pic above is an actual screenshot from the game).

“The Dark Defender”

Filed under: Comics, Dexter, TV — Scott King at 11:25 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

So after last night’s “Dexter,” who else wants to read a “Dark Defender” comic? I’m also curious as to who did the pencils in the promotional art. I think I’ll email Pop Candy and see if Whitney can help me find out.

Update: A poster just shared this link which takes you to Showtime’s website where they have posted a “Dark Defender” video-comic. It’s basically a short promo that looks like it was done in Flash or in a  similar program, but of course if you’re a fan of the show, you have to check it out.   Thanks Josh!

“Star Trek’s” Country Music Awards?

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 11:24 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

I’m sorry, but when did the Country Music Awards join Starfleet? I was watching “Brothers and Sisters” last night (an awesome show and SHAME on you for still not watching it) and there was a commercial for the CMA’s with a massive Starfleet logo in the background.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with “Star Trek,” the logo to the right is the symbol used in the “Star Trek” and the logo to the left is from the CMA’s website. So what’s going on? Is it some joke Trekkies are playing on red necks or what?

TV Deaths

“24″ Season Seven Trailer

Filed under: 24, TV — Scott King at 11:20 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

Did you hear a trailer for the seventh season of “24” has hit the web? The basic gist is that terrorist have hacked CTU’s firewalls and infrastructure and that Jack has to leave LA to track them down. The twist is that the bad guy of the season is a resurrected Tony Almeda.

Last season of “24” was painful to watch. Specially since the fifth season was the best season ever. So now I’m really worried that they are bringing back my favorite “24” character and that they are going to do a hack job of it.

“Death: High Cost of Living” Movie

Filed under: Comic-Movies, Comics — Scott King at 11:19 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

Things are moving closer to production for Neil Gaiman’s “Death: The High Cost of Living” adaptation. The movie, which is based on the comic book mini-series, will be directed by Gaimen and produced by Guillermo del Toro. In a recent interview, Gaiman had this to say:

You can have many different types of executive producer … what Guillermo really wants to do is be there as a safety net for me. (Read on …)

The Office Convention

Filed under: TV, The Office — Scott King at 11:15 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

I’m so mad I didn’t get to go to this, but in Scranton Pennsylvanian they held a “The Office” convention. Every cast member, except for Steve Carnell, was at the event which lasted three days. Pop Candy went to the event and covers it:

I happened to walk in at the exact moment Creed Bratton stepped in as singer for The Scrantones, and he was a sight to behold. Shortly thereafter, Craig Robinson (Darryl) grabbed the mic and belted out I Will Survive. He may not have Bratton’s musical chops — Creed was a member of ’60s band The Grass Roots — but what he lacked in skill he made up for in spirit.

Whit is supposed to do a longer write up of it (including interviews) later in the week. Updated@2:52pm: Man’s she’s quick. She already posted a more detailed summary of the convention here.

Problem with International Space Station

Filed under: News News — Scott King at 11:10 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

This is kinda scary and something you’d see in a sci-fi show. Astronauts were on a space walk yesterday when they discovered a joint needed to turn a set of solar power panels was filled with metal shavings.

“It’s quite clear that it’s metal-to-metal grating or something, and it’s widespread,” Tani said.

“Wow,” said his spacewalking partner, Scott Parazynski.

The shavings resembled small flakes and were clinging to the joint as if to a magnet, Tani said. “It looks like a dusty table that you’d want to dust at home,” he called down.

“The Flash” Movie Update

Filed under: Comic-Movies, Comics, DC Comics — Scott King at 11:07 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

David Dobkins, who did “The Wedding Crashers” and “Fred Claus” has been hired to direct “The Flash” movie. The film will focus on Wally West and will somehow be tied to the CGI “Justice League Movie,” though all other details are being kept hush-hush.

Katherine Heigl is a Smoker

Filed under: Celebrities, Grey's Anatomy — Scott King at 11:05 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

Ewwwww just found out “Knocked Up” and “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Katherine Heigl is a smoker. She always comes off so cool and sensible in interviews. Plus she’s pretty! So it’s a shame that on a 1-10 scale she’s now a negative infinity.

“Underworld 3″

Filed under: Movies — Scott King at 11:04 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

Do they really need to make a third “Underworld” movie? The film will be a prequel set in the medieval ages and is being called “Rise of the Lycans.” It will follow the vampire character of Lucian (from the first film) as he rises to power and starts the war against werewolves.

The important thing to note is that hottie Kate Beckinsale will not appear in the movie.

“Stargate Atlantis” Renewed

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 11:02 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

The “SG-1” spinoff was picked up for a fifth season of twenty episodes.

The fourth season premiered on Sept. 28 and delivered more than 2 million viewers. The new season added two new regular cast members: Amanda Tapping, formerly of Atlantis’ predecessor series, Stargate SG-1, and Jewel Staite, formerly of Firefly and Serenity.

Rumors are also swirling that another “Stargate” spin-off is in the works and could have a winter 2009 premier date.

“Spyro The Dragon” Movie

Filed under: Movies, Video Games — Scott King at 11:00 am on Monday, October 29, 2007

Remember Spyro the Dragon? He had some really annoying platform video games? Well the little 3-D dragon is now getting his own computer animated film.

The movie will follow the storyline from the earlier games which focus on Spyro, a rare purple dragon, who is prophesized to save all dragon-kind against an omnipotent evil.

52 Days of 52: Week 4

Filed under: 52, DC Comics — Scott King at 1:29 pm on Sunday, October 28, 2007

There was a sequence within this issue that broke the fourth wall in a way I found humorous. The issue starts off with Renee Montoya doing a stakeout for The Question. She talks about how boring it is and nothing is really going on. She even has a notepad where she writes “Day 9: Nothing” “Day 10: Nothing” up to Day 13 were still nothing has happened. (Read on …)

More Eskimo Dave

Edit: Then and Now

Filed under: Edit, Me — Scott King at 11:00 pm on Saturday, October 27, 2007

Since Lisa and Craig LOVE my “Weekly Dose of Edit” pics, I thought I’d share this bonus one.

Edit’s favorite game in the whole world is fetch. She loves it when I take the mouse-ball and launch it across the room. She then chases after it, pounces it, and brings it back. So the first two pics above are Edit the first day I got her way back in June. Even then she loved the toy! Then the second two pics are her today, bringing the toy back to me (it’s a really hard picture to take because my camera is crappy and I can’t adjust shutter speeds).

Guitar Halo

I know. I’m a dork. Just thought it was a funny picture.

American University named one of the Top Film schools by “Hollywood Reporter”

Filed under: American University — Scott King at 11:38 am on Saturday, October 27, 2007

My program at AU makes Hollywood Reporter’s” list for top film schools:

American University
School
of Communication
, Film & Media Arts Department
Tuition: $31,000
Unique advantages: Strong, socially active documentary studies; access to network news organizations; “Summer in L.A.” internship program

Ideal for: Politically active storytellers. Larry Kirkman, the dean for the School of Communication, touts AU’s blended curriculum, which gives equal emphasis to filmmaking, journalism and public communications. Kirkman also cites the school’s embrace of cutting-edge media like mobisodes, and ultimately, he says, “Hollywood or Washington, you use the same tools.”

A word from an alumna: Danielle Gelber, senior vp original programming at Showtime, says, “I found it to be the most personalized, hands-on program. You could go to school in the ivory tower in the morning and then drive down the street that afternoon and be field-producing stories for network news.”

52 Days of 52: Week 3

Filed under: 52, DC Comics — Scott King at 11:33 am on Saturday, October 27, 2007

What I find most shocking about this issue is that the DC Universe has a New York city in it! I had no idea. It’s just weird. So it was a surprise to find out that Black Adam was opening an embassy there.

Another weird thing is that they are really putting “52” into as many numbers as possible. STAR Labs has a secret project called “The NX-520,” remember last week an address was given at 520 Kane street, and then Black Adam says that 5,079,432 died in “Infinite Crisis” …if you cut out all the middle numbers you get “52.” (Read on …)

Helboy VS Universal Studio Monsters

Filed under: Comic-Movies, Movies — Scott King at 11:15 am on Saturday, October 27, 2007

Director Guillermo Del Toro has always wanted to mix the classic Universal Monsters with comic property “Hellboy,” and at the premiere of “30 Days of Night” it was hinted that possibility just might happen.

“There might be something going on but I don’t think that I can talk about it…there might be something that is being discussed” said Dark Horse Entertainment owner and “Hellboy” publisher Mike Richardson to IESB.Net.

Richardson also confirmed that a feature film for spin-off “B.P.R.D.” is moving forward but these plans will depend on the success of the “Hellboy” sequel next year.

Weekly Dose of Edit

Filed under: Edit, Me — Scott King at 10:12 am on Friday, October 26, 2007

Since I’m on campus all day I thought I’d give you you’re weekly dose of Edit. I was going to use the bowl in the picture for carving a pumpkin but as soon as I got it out of the cabinet, she got in it and wouldn’t get out. She played for about 30 minutes sliding all round until she finally fell asleep.

52 Days of 52: Week 2

Filed under: 52, DC Comics — Scott King at 10:11 am on Friday, October 26, 2007

Things are moving along, but a little bit slower than last issue. Week two seemed to really focus on Booster Gold, Ralph Dibny and Renee Montoya. Then there is one really odd scene between two scientist, Doc Magnus and Master Mind.

The oddest thing of the issue had to be the several-page long scene between these two. In one sense the conversations seems very “preachy” about A.I. sentient beings and all that sci-fi mumbo jumbo. It also seems out of place and doesn’t really fit in with anything else happening in the first two issues. I mean why was this scene here? Why are we being introduced to these characters now? Clearly Master Mind and all this A.I. stuff is going to appear later in the series in a prominent way, ‘cause otherwise, why would they waste time with this scene in issue two? (Read on …)

Scott King vs Verizon

So apparently whenever I check my email on my phone it uses minutes. Also whenever I talk to Mike form Th3rd World it uses minutes (because he has cingular). So for the past two months I’ve been WAY over my regular monthly minutes. In September I was 380 minutes over my minutes and in October I was 310 minutes over. What’s annoying is that I have NEVER gone over my minutes in the 5 years I’ve had a cell phone. (Read on …)

Space Doubles Preview

Filed under: Comics, Th3rd World Studios — Scott King at 6:56 am on Thursday, October 25, 2007

I’m on campus so I figured now would be an excellent time to pimp out “Space Doubles.” The five-issue mini series is in the current issue of Previews and its Diamond Order # OCT073781.

In a nutshell, “Space Doubles” is a retro-double feature showcasing some of the hottest/upcoming talent in comics, is presented in flip-format with each half of the book telling an original sci-fi tale ranging from alien invasions to space flight to just about everything in between.

Issue one features “Obeah” by Leah Moore and John Reppion (“Albion” and “Witchblade”) and “Red Rain” by Mike Raicht (“Deadworld: Frozen Over” and Marvel’s “MAX Zombie”). Moore’s tale is set against the backdrop of a blackened planet and focuses on the scientists attempting to colonize it while in Raicht’s story, something large enough to be seen by the eye has landed on the moon and it’s up to a team of seven to investigate.

If the book sounds interesting check out a preview here and be sure to tell your local comic shop to order the book.

52 Days of 52: Week 1

Filed under: 52, DC Comics — Scott King at 6:55 am on Thursday, October 25, 2007

This is clearly a set up issue. We are introduced to the people who I’m assuming will be the main cast throughout the series and we get a glimpse of their stories. The cast includes, Renee Montoya, The Question, Steel, Steel’s Niece, Booster Gold, Skeets, Black Adam, and the Elongated Man.

What really strikes me as interesting in this first book is that not only are the characters established but their personalities are established too. It’s done in such a way that it feels like the characters might actually grow and change. They may have a real story arch and that’s something you rarely see in comics from the Big Two because normally its all about the status quo. So if anything I’m actually excited to be reading this. “Private Practice” Masturbation Jokes

Filed under: Private Practice, TV — Scott King at 10:53 pm on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

I’m a boy. I also have the humor of a ten year old. However, even I was grossed out by all the masturbation jokes in last night’s “Private Practice.” For those of you who didn’t see it, Addison was extremely horny and to prevent her from having sex with a co-worker her friends gave her a long pep-talk on masturbation. The episode then climaxed …errr closed with the final shot being Addison holding a shower head and trying to decide if she was going to fantasize about a cowboy or gladiator. ewwww Ewwww EWWWW!

“O.C.” reference on “Gossip Girl”

Filed under: Gossip Girl, TV — Scott King at 10:52 pm on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Did you catch the reference to “The O.C.” in tonight’s “Gossip Girl?” At the masquerade ball, Serena was dancing with a guy who said, “…Every time we see their yacht it makes me want to pull out our air horns and let them rip. It’s almost enough o make you not want to summer in Newport again.” Of course just mentioning “Newport” and “Summer” could just be a coincidence… except for the fact that “Gossip Girl’s” Executive Producer Josh Schwartz was the creator of “The O.C.”

Man, I miss Seth and his sail boat summer as well as the very hot Rachel Bilson who was “Summer.”    :sigh:

Heroes Episode 5 Wrap Up & Spoilers

Filed under: Heroes, TV — Scott King at 8:46 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

We finally got to see the Kristen Bell on “Heroes” and I feel cheated. She was barely on the show and didn’t have any interaction with the regular cast members. At least I’m not the only one who feels this season’s pacing is off, Executive Producer Greg Beaming posted the following in his blog:

This episode is, perhaps, most notable for the introduction of Kristen Bell to the HEROES lineup. We have been introducing a lot of new characters in these early episodes. I know that, to some people, it feels like it’s been too much too fast, and some wonder where have last year’s heroes gone? But Tim Kring expressed from the beginning of the development of this year that it was important to him to keep evolving the big-picture story.

Then I have a few upcoming spoilers I’m posting after the break: (Read on …)

52 Days of 52: Week 0

I finally got all 52 issues of DC’s weekly series “52” and I’ve decided to read one issue a day. Then, after reading each issue I’ll make a blog post about it. The post will not exactly be a review or a summary. It will be my reaction to the to plot and characters. This experiment should be interesting and if it goes well maybe I’ll make these type of posts regularly.

No “Superman” Sequel for Mark Millar

Filed under: Comics, DC Comics — Scott King at 8:40 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

This is great! Mark Millar is totally reaping what he sowed. For those of you who don’t know, Millar is a comic book writer who has a habit of being a dick on the internet. Of course a lot of creators are like that, but what truly makes Millar different is the air of arrogance that surrounds him. He just makes himself so unlikable.

So it cracks me up that just a few days ago he started a grass-roots campaign to get himself hired to write the sequel to “Superman Returns.” What’s great about it is that the studio told him “no” because of who he is!

Well, sadly, I’m a Marvel guy and we were surprised to find out that WB couldn’t hire me for a DC property. They were incredibly nice and superbly apologetic about it, but when they discussed the matter seriously DC explained just how associated I am with Marvel Comics at the moment and it’s against company policy to hire the competition.

So if Millar hadn’t made a billion posts this past year about how DC sucks and about how if he worked for DC he would fix everyone of their titles and raise their sales to 300k then there is a good chance he could have gotten hired by Hollywood.

Tony Soprano Didn’t Die

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 8:40 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Turns out that Tony Soprano didn’t die in the series finale’. Well, we all already knew that. What we didn’t know is that he didn’t die after the screen cut to black. But what’s even odder is that series creator David Chase doesn’t understands why fans were so upset about the cut to black.

Breaking his silence months after the HBO mob drama ended its run, he is offering a belated explanation for that blackout at the restaurant. He strongly suggests that, no, Tony Soprano didn’t get whacked moments later as he munched onion rings with his family at Holsten’s. And mostly Chase wonders why so many viewers got so worked up over the series’ non-finish.

Really? He has no idea why people were angry about it?

Real Comic-Book Geeks on “Beauty and the Geek”

Filed under: Comics, TV — Scott King at 8:39 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Did you see last night’s “Beauty and The Geek?” I was surprised when during the middle of the episode Brian Lynch, Eric Powell, and Dwight Albatross showed up. The comic book creators were there to judge a challenge in which the Beauties and Geeks created their own super-heroes. Personally, Aqua-chick was my favorite and Venus (the one that hypnotized people with her boobs) kinda scared me.
