Find815.com Theory

Here is my Theory about the recent viral campaign for “Lost.”

Sam Thomas was looking for the crashed 815 plane because his wife was on board. Soon after Sam began searching The Maxwell Group announced that they found the crash deep in the Ocean. This discovery leads the public to believe that there aren’t any survivors. Sam, trying to deal with the loss, decides to investigate the crashed plane (which is deep in the ocean) and in doing so learns that its not the real Flight 815. So now he’s trying to get the message out to the world that Oceanic Airlines and The Maxwell Group are lying to people about the plane being found and that there are no survivors.

Proof:

  • We know from the main find815 website that Sam Thomas is searching for the crashed 815 plane because his wife was onboard.
  • We know from “Lost” that the rescue search was called off because they already found the plane crash and there were no survivors.
  • We know from the Oceanic Airlines commercial that aired during “Eli Stone” ((or didn’t air because your local affiliate cut it off)) that Sam Thomas feels Oceanic Airlines is lying to people and he’s trying to get the message out there.
  • In the Oceanic Airlines commercial the site http://flyoceanicair.com/ was mentioned. If you go there you can find a press release with this number (818) 460-5520. When you call the number it just tells you to watch “Eli Stone.” However if you stay on the line it allows you to enter in a login number and password. After trying a billion passwords and none of them worked a message got on telling me there was a problem with the service and that I should contact The Maxwell Group. If you go to The Maxwell Group website (http://www.the-maxwell-group.com/) they point you to a radio interview here http://www.uclaradio.com/2008/01/31/oscar-talbot-on-a-deep-sea-discovery/ where it mentions how Sam Thomas was the one who found the crashed 815 plane.

I love viral campaigns an I think the Lost folks have been real geniuses with it from day one. They have done a great job of keeping people interested, involved and interacting with the show and it’s subplots. This is what I think comic books should do on the web - instead of just taking comics and putting them on the web, why not make more interactive content that encourages people to both go online and buy the comics?
