Scarlet TV Not a TV Show

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 8:00 am on Monday, April 28, 2008

Just want to clarify because I’ve had two friends ask me about “Scarlet.” It’s not a TV series, it’s a series of TVs made by LG. If it was a TV show, the commercials would not air on all the major networks, just the ones that have ties with the channel it’s airing on. It’s a big viral marketing stunt for TV’s that has really mislead a lot of people.

Guilermo del Toro Directs “The Hobbit”

Filed under: Books, Movies — Scott King at 12:13 am on Friday, April 25, 2008

I’m just not excited about this.

Del Toro’s moving to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his Wingnut and WETA production teams. He’ll direct the two films back to back, with the sequel which will deal with the 60-year period between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Partially because I think the whole “sequel” is complete bullshit. It’s like what Warner Bros is doing to “Harry Potter.” It’s about adding an extra movie to make more money. There is no story or character driven reason to have these additional movies

  • 10. Kate Beckinsale

Of that list, I can only agree that MAYBE two of the girls deserve to be on it.

Brightest Spot on Earth

Filed under: News News — Scott King at 12:13 am on Friday, April 25, 2008

NASA has shared some night photos of the earth taken back in 2003 to show how “bright” the globe has become. Tokyo, the U.S. East Coast, the major cities of the U. K. and Ireland, Tokyo, the Loop in Chicago, and the brightly-lit docks of Long Beach, CA are among the bright spot. But NASA awards the dubious distinction of the Brightest Spot on Earth to the Las Vegas Strip (that’s Vegas in the pic above).

NoParks (Mini Parks in No-Parking Zones)

Filed under: News News — Scott King at 12:13 am on Friday, April 25, 2008

There is a project in NYC to turn hydrant no-parking zones into mini parks. It seems like an interesting concept and if it works (meaning the plants don’t just die) then it might be a green-thing I support.

NoPark returns “no parking zones”—mostly those associated fire hydrant placement- -to low growth mosses and grasses. These micro engineered green spaces prevent storm water run off, use foliage to stabilize the soil, and to provide a durable low maintenance surface cover. These microparks continue to provide emergency parking space for fire trucks and exasperated Fresh-direct delivery persons.

Iridum Flare in D.C.

Filed under: D.C., Movies — Scott King at 12:13 am on Friday, April 25, 2008

So there was a weird light in the sky last night right around 9p.m. I envisioned aliens or some some apocalyptic event, but turns out it was an Iridium Flare, which is a sunflare from a satellite in orbit.

The Iridium communication satellites have a peculiar shape with three polished door-sized antennas, 120 degrees apart and at 40 degree angles with the main bus. The forward mirror faces the direction in which the satellite is travelling. Occasionally an antenna will directly reflect sunlight down to the Earth, creating a predictable and quickly moving illuminated spot of about 10 km diameter. To an observer this looks like an extremely bright flare in the sky with a duration of a couple of seconds or longer.

You know your first thought was “Highlander.”

Watchmen Contest

Filed under: Comic-Movies, Comics, DC Comics, Movies — Scott King at 12:21 am on Thursday, April 24, 2008

“Watchmen” is holding a contest that could earn you a cameo in the final film. What they want is for people to make a commercial for Veidt Enterprise and to upload it here (there are also logos and graphics).

To get started, download the standard definition and/or high definition assets from the links below, and then shoot your own original TV commercial that advertises one of the products! Remember, the movie is set in 1985, so TV commercials should be in 4:3 aspect ratio (so it looks like standard TV, not widescreen) and they should be either 15, 30 or 60 seconds in length. The products are all made by “Veidt Enterprises,” and you can download the product logos for your use as well.

Cybill Sheperd will be joining Pysch for at least two episodes, including the third season premiere on July 18th. Her character, Shawn’s mother, will return to Santa Barbara to help with a case. Apparently the character is a little bit on the crazy side, which is why Shawn is so free spirited.

Scrubs’ “The Princess”

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 9:11 am on Wednesday, April 23, 2008

“Scrubs’” final episode on NBC is being called “The Princess” and is a spoof/homage to “The Princess Bride.” Bill Lawrence told TV Guide the following:

“It’s like last year when we did the musical. Some of the response was like, “Who gives a s–t?” But we were happy. Same thing when we did the live-action sitcom. And this year, partly because my wife always jokes that I haven’t written an episode of Scrubs that my kids can watch, and partly because one of our favorite family movies is The Princess Bride, we did a huge homage to The Princess Bride. Zach directed it like a major feature; we blew our entire season’s budget on it. There are horse chases and castles…. Janitor is a giant, Elliot is a princess, Dr. Cox is a knight. It’s crazy and silly for a seventh-year show to be trying this stuff, but, man, I’m really proud of it.”

Happy Earth Day

Simply things I do that may or may not help the planet.

  • Use reusable grocery store bags.
  • Have only put gas in my car 3 time since Christmas (that’s including the two times I did when traveling to Cleveland).
  • Use washable containers instead of ziplock bags.
  • Recycle paper, plastics, and cans.

See I’m realistic (i.e. cynical) but I still make an effort. It just really irks me when someone who is obsessed with being green brags about how they only take 3 minute cold showers or how they make a difference by keeping their heated pool at 78 instead of 80 degrees.

Green Filmmaking is Stupid

Filed under: Movies, News News — Scott King at 8:53 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

I learned yesterday about a movement to make filming more “green.” To do so it was said that people should use lights with lower wattage, not shoot on film, and several other ridiculous ideas. I understand the desire to “save the world,”but filmmaking is an art-form. You paint a movie with light and to do so you need big ass lighting set ups. If poorly lit they look like crap. There is no way around that. You wouldn’t ask

Then as to the whole not using film mentality because it means less bad chemicals are used when developing the film— that’s just silly too. Yeah digital technology has come a long, but it still isn’t as pretty as good old 35mm film. Also, shooting digitally means you’re using DV tapes or hard drives. Things that still will have to be disposed of and aren’t really biodegradable.

So the whole Green Filmmaking concept of making a movie without leaving a “foot print” is stupid.

George Lucas on “Indiana Jones” Fans

Filed under: Movies — Scott King at 8:07 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Wow the more and more I learn about George Lucas the more of a prick he seems. In the recent issue of Entertainment Weekly he said this:

We’re only going to get aggravation. The fans think it’s gonna be the Second Coming. And it’s not the Second Coming. They’ve already written the story in their heads, and lemme tell ya, its not that story. So they’re going to be very disappointed. I went through this with Phantom Menace. Believe me, I’ve been there, I’ve done it. I know exactly the way they react. And they’re very vocal about these things. We’re not gonna have adoring fans sending us e-mails saying how much they loved the movie. We’re gonna have a bunch of angry people saying, “You’re a bunch of assholes and you should never have done this. You’ve ruined my life forever. I loved Indiana Jones so much an d now its ruined.” And all that kind of stuff.

It gets better. Steven Spielberg’s response to what Lucas said is:

Uh, he needs to speak for himself here. You need to put in parentheses “George Lucas is totally speaking for himself.” And I absolve myself of any connection with that last statement about fans not liking it.

Amy Acker joins “Dollhouse”

She’s no Emma Claulfield or James Marsters, but I’m still super happy about buffy-verse-vet Amy Acker joining Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse.” Whedon made the announcement only yesterday via a comment on his blog:

Dr. Claire Saunders will be played by… yet another name I’m gonna have trouble remembering how to spell… Amy Acker. All in all, pound for pound, soup to nuts, man vs beas, it’s a pretty amazing ensemble. I’m not sure how I landed this troupe, but rest assured I’m gonna write bestest good word for talk talkacting to them! They’re in good hands.

Dr. Claire Saunders, the smart yet sad looker-after of the dolls who may or may not have a crush on nerdy programmer.

The President And The Pope

Filed under: News News — Scott King at 8:32 am on Thursday, April 17, 2008

Until today I had no real beef with President Bush or Pope Benedic. However they both pissed me off when at 7:35a.m. they decided to drive down Wisconsin Ave with a progression of over 20 cop cars (each car had a siren blaring). There were definitely more than 20 cops, 20 was just the number I counted after I finally got out of bed and looked out the window to see what th heck was going on.
