There are lots of theories floating around about last night’s episode. I even spent over 2 hours  (updated) 4 hours discussing it with someone. However I only have one big theory I want to share and I’ll post it after the break… (Read on …)

“Star Trek” Composer Died

Filed under: Movies — Scott King at 12:51 pm on Thursday, May 29, 2008

The composer of the original “Star Trek” theme died.

Courage’s fanfare for the U.S.S. Enterprise, written in 1965 for the first of two Star Trek pilots, was heard throughout the three original seasons of the show and has been reprised throughout all the Trek feature films and several of the TV series, notably Star Trek: The Next Generation in the 1980s and ’90s.

DragonBall Z: Burst Limit

Filed under: Video Games — Scott King at 12:34 pm on Thursday, May 29, 2008

In the next week or so I should be getting an advance copy of “DragonBall-Z: Burst Limit” to post an early review. So far I really don’t know too much about the gameplay, though I have to say the graphics look great. Although I’ve never been a big DBZ fan, I know the fans LOVE the art style so even the most hardcore of a fan should appreciates Burst Limit’s graphics.

Michael Ausiello Leaves TV Guide

Michael Ausiello, one of the best spoiler-journalist on the web announced yesterday he is leaving TV Guide for EW. Ausiello has been providing spoilers for over eight years and has gained split second cameos on shows like “Scrubs” “Gilmore Girls” “Felicity” and “Veronica Mars.” No word yet on if he will be doing spoiler-work for EW or what.

“Alone in the Dark”

I’m getting an advance copy of “Alone in the Dark” (which comes out in a few weeks) so that I can post an early review. The trailer above is the first to include actual gameplay. So far the graphics look about standard for the 360. It should be interesting to see how well the camera works since this is one of those types of games where things jump out and scare the hell out of you.

Sweeps Results

Fox has come in as the most popular network in America, beating out ABC, NBC, The CW and CBS. This is the firs time since the network started in 1987 that it has come in at #1 in the ratings for the season. It’s also the first time since the 90’s that CBS didn’t take first place.

The Best Women in Film and TV

Filed under: Movies, TV — Scott King at 3:56 pm on Friday, May 23, 2008

I started a discussion over at Pop Candy about the female characters best in Film and TV:

So the comic-book blogsphere is still talking about the Iron Man movie, specifically about whether or not the character of Pepper Potts was a bad character or not. This led me to think, “Hmm, who is the best female character of all time?” I only came up with one answer: Lorelei Gilmore. So I ask ye … what other female characters in film/TV are on par with Lorelai’s overall awesomeness? — Scott K.
You think Lorelei is better than Buffy? I may have to disagree with you on that one … She probably ranks at the top for me. Another person who comes to mind is Maude from Harold & Maude – I love her spirit! Annie Hall is another good one. Frances McDormand’s character in Fargo, Marge, is another one of my favorites.

Buffy is of course a great answer and in my opinion she’s almost tied with Lorelai (after all BTVS is my all time favorite TV show), but the problem with Buffy is that when you get into season 6 and season 7 she goes through a weird personality change for a bit (had to do with being pulled out of heaven) and for a big chunk of episodes she’s just wasn’t not as strong of a character as say Lorelei is.

Google Doodle

Was confused when I went to Google and saw the above pic. It was apparently the winner of “Doodle 4 Google…”

Doodle 4 Google is a competition where we invite K-12 students to reinvent Google’s homepage logo. This year we asked U.S. kids to doodle around the theme “What if…?”

Our winning doodle, selected from over 16,000 entries, was created by Grace Moon, a 6th grader at Canyon Middle School from Castro Valley, California. Grace’s lovely doodle, “Up in the Clouds,” will grace our homepage, Google.com, on May 22nd, 2008.

The Compulsions of a Storyteller

Filed under: Comics, Me — Scott King at 10:26 am on Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I just saw James Kochalka’s strip for yesterday (the first two panels appear above) and it completely clicked with me. His view on his art/storytelling is exactly the same way I see writing. Being a writing isn’t about being published or collecting a paycheck (though those things are very nice). A writer is someone who writes because they have to.

What happens is you get like a bazillion ideas, most of them really bad or really silly. But then out of nowhere you get a good idea and it kinda makes a nest in your brain. The idea lives in that nests and grows and grows and grows. It starts to drive you crazy and eats up all your other thoughts so that sometimes its hard to focus on anything but that idea.

So the only way to get rid of the idea is to write it out. Of course it’s a vicious cycle because right around the time you nearly clear the idea out of your head, another good idea forms a nest and festers until you sit down and write it out too.

So my semi-boss at iTunes/American University quit to take some $100k salary job. As a result my part time 10-15 hour a week job has turned into a 40+ hour a week job just so that I can be trained in fancy stuff (like Motion, a blu ray disc recorder, a tapeless HD camera and other geeky stuff) before he leaves. Things should return to normal next week (his last day is Friday).

‘Grand Theft Auto’ Sues Chicago

Filed under: News News, Video Games — Scott King at 9:07 pm on Thursday, May 8, 2008

Take-Two Interactive, publisher of — among other things — Grand Theft Auto IV, is taking legal action against the Chicago Transit Authority regarding an issue with an advertising campaign. Apparently the Transit Authority, who works with Titan Worldwide Chicago for advertising, prematurely pulled ads that featured GTA IV for an unconfirmed reason and thus infringed on Take-Two’s free-speech rights. As a result, Take-Two is suing the Chicago Transit Authority and is asking that a federal judge stop the CTA from pulling the GTA ads. The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan.

SAG Could Strike

AMPTP walked away from the negation table with SAG, which means a second strike could very well happen. Word on the street is that AMPTP doesn’t think SAG has the balls to strike after everything Hollywood had to deal with during the writers strike and apparently SAG and willing to call AMPTP’s bluff.

Jensen Ackles Leaves “Supernatural?”

Filed under: Supernatural, TV — Scott King at 9:07 pm on Thursday, May 8, 2008

Eric Kripke did gave a very sarcastic answer during an interview that cracked me up:

And then about the finale, “No Rest for the Wicked,” I assume Jensen Ackles’ character dies and that’s the last we’ll see of him on the show? Yes, Jensen wanted to focus on movies, and he wouldn’t give me the 25 percent salary kickback I demanded, so he’s leaving the series. Chad Michael Murray is joining the cast to replace him, and next year will be like that season on Dukes of Hazzard where it was Vance and Coy instead of Bo and Luke. Everything’s gonna be a little bit off, but it’ll be good…I think you’ll like it.

Ugly Betty crew vs. Arnold Schwarzenegger

Filed under: TV — Scott King at 9:06 pm on Thursday, May 8, 2008

“Ugly Betty” announced earlier this week that the show will be moving production from LA to NYC. Most of the press has seen this as a good thing saying it will add to the realistic-feel of the show. However the crew is pissed and blaming Schwarzenegger as well as the state of California for losing their jobs (because the crew won’t be following the show to NYC). As a result the crew ran the following add in Variety:

To Whom it Should Concern
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Members of the State Senate and State Assembly, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Los Angeles City Council, and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors:

We are writing to you because we just lost our jobs. We are the 300 plus members of the crew of the television show Ugly Betty. We were informed this Tuesday that the production of our show is moving to New York primarily because of the 35% tax incentives being offered by the state of New York. Instead of making good wages and paying our fair share of California state income tax, we will all be collecting Unemployment Benefits. In addition, we will certainly be cutting our spending back to the bone, which will not only cut back our sales tax contributions substantially, but it could end up costing the jobs of the people who provide services and products to us. Not only are these crew positions being lost; all of our local vendors are losing our business. (Read on …)

“The Avengers” Movie Announced

Filed under: Comics, Marvel Comics — Scott King at 9:50 am on Monday, May 5, 2008

Marvel announced this morning that “The Avengers” will hit the big screen in July 2011 as will “Captain America” in May 2011. Other previously announced films still in the works include “Punisher: War Zone” (Dec. 2008), “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (May 2009), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2010), and Ant-Man (2010).

So from this we can conclude that “The Avengers” movie will consist of the cast defined in the first four issues of the series: Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man, and Wasp. It should be interesting to see if Hulk, Sub-Mariner, or Loki end up as the main villain of the movie.

Blah “Speed Racer”

Filed under: Movies — Scott King at 11:45 pm on Sunday, May 4, 2008

5 Reasons I have no desire to see “Speed Racer” in the theater (I’ll of course watch it on DVD cause I watch everything on DVD).

  • Don’t want to have a seizure. You’d think Hollywood would have learned from those flashy Japanese cartoons in the 90’s.
  • Does anyone remember “Matrix: Reloaded & Revolution.”
  • Christina Ricci has scary bug eyes in the trailer and the thought of them on a big screen is terrifying.
  • Let’s say that hypothetically it ends up actually being an “ok” movie (which it won’t be) even then it still won’t compare to people’s memory of the cartoon.
  • Seeing Mathew Fox as Racer X will make me think less of Jack and I just can’t do that to Jack.

“Iron Man” breaks $200 Million

Filed under: Comic-Movies, Comics, Marvel Comics — Scott King at 1:40 pm on Sunday, May 4, 2008

According to Nikki Finke’s math, “Iron Man” made over $200 million this weekend!

With this addition, the total estimated box office is $104,250,000. The estimated international box office for the weekend is $96,750,000 from 57 territories. The total combined estimated global box office for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man is $201,000,000.

Not only are those numbers insane (most box office gurus were saying it would only make around $70 million), but its second highest opening for a non-sequel (The first being “Spider-Man” which made over $140 million).

Happy Free Comic Book Day!

Filed under: Comics — Scott King at 6:41 am on Saturday, May 3, 2008

Today is Free Comic Book Day, the day when many comic readers travel to multiple stores just to get free comics. So I plead to you, instead of getting just that reprint of “All Star Superman” or the “Xmen” book, consider picking up a copy of Owly or Amelia Rules and giving it away to a kid who isn’t already a comic reader. Think of today more as “bring in new readers day” and do your best to help create the future generation of readers.
