The Women Behind The Women

There is an 18 minute documentary about the movie “The Woman” where the actors (Annette Bening, Candice Bergen,  Carrie Fisher, Meg Ryan, Ana Gasteyer, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Bette Midler, Jada Pinket Smith… )and director discuss the difference between beauty and Hollywood-Beauty. The “behind the scenes” part of the documentary are boring for anyone who’s ever seen a “behind the scene” video before, but when the actors start discussing stereotypes and how woman are potrayed it gets interesting.
The comments made by the actors and even the topic itself reminded me of one of my favorite video clips, which is fitting since I remembered it was DOVE that produced it:

It’s weird that a full documentary hasn’t been made about Hollywood Beauty vs Real Beauty. It’s a topic that has been discussed for ages and always comes up in film classes or in magazine articles. So why hasn’t there been one? It’s not like this topic is a big secret or that actors refuse to talk about it. I mean clearly as you can see in “The Women Behind The Women” big name stars have no problem being honest about it.

Just as shocking is the fact that “The Women” is one of the only movies ever to have an all female cast. It’s a concept that seems very simple and easy to do, but in terms of films, it’s rarely been done. For things like “Hollywood Beauty” to become denounced then more discussion on the topic is a must and more ground breaking things, like having an all-female cast have to become non-ground breaking normal day occurrences.

If you have time give the documentary “The Women Behind The Women” a watch. My biggest compliant about it is that it is too short. I’d really like to see a longer version where they had the the time to really go in depth on the topic.
