SNL was Watchable

Wow. Last night’s “SNL” was the best I’ve seen in a long time. It easily out did every episode from last year. The show kicked of with Dane Cook. Normally he gets on my nerves because he’s so over the top but he toned it down and was actually funny.
Now don’t get me wrong. There is no perfect episode of “SNL” but like classic episodes, everything after “Weekend Update” sucked.
“Weekend Update” was great in that it started with Brian Gumbel getting ready to take over the hosting gig left vacant by Tina Fey. He actually seemed upset when he was told that Seth Myers would be doing it. Of course Myers is no true replacement for Fey, but who would be? I think the biggest let down was that Myers and co-host Amy Pohler had no chemistry.
My favorite skit of the night was actually a segment within “Weekend Update” where Darrel Hammond did his Bill Clinton impression. The SNL-version of Clinton is by far my favorite character that has ever been on the show. So it was great seeing Hammond do him.
Another skit that impressed me was “Al Pachino Checks His Bank Balance.” All it was, was a guy impersonating Pachino while on the phone. It was very simple but hilarious.
The oddest skit of the night was “Cubicle Fight.” It didn’t fit in with the show and since it was called a “digital short” it seemed like SNL was just doing it so that they could put it on the internet or hope it would become popular on Your Tube.
All in all it was a good start to a season and I hope they can just keep up the quality.
