Wizard Loves Me

I won a contest from Wizard Magazine. They were offering a free copy of “Xenosaga III,” (a game I want but didn’t want to spend money on), if someone could connect the game with the TV show “Eureka” in six steps.
Using IMBD.com I said, “Assitant Scott is voiced by actor Brian Chase. Brian Chase was on an episode of "House." Salli Richardson was on an episode of "House." Salli Richardson is Allison Blake on "Eureka".”
I was the first one to answer it, so I’m getting the game!xenosaga.jpg

Wii Details

playingwii.jpg
Yesterday, Nintendo announced when Wii will hit the stands. The system will cost $249 and will be on shelves on Nov. 19, two days after the Playstation 3 goes on sale.
The Wii is by far the cheapest system on the market. The Xbox 360 is going for $299 for a watered down version and $399 for a real version. The PS3 will be on sale for $499 and $599.
Nintendo also announced that they will have over 30 games out by Christmas. Looking over the list there was only one I want, “The Legend of Zelda.” Since there is only one game that interests me, I’m starting to wonder if I should really spend the money on Wii.
I want a PS3, but not until some good rpgs come out. I want Xbox 360, but not until “Halo 3” comes out.  …so I almost wonder if I should hold off on the Wii too.

Nintendo Clock

nintendo_clock.jpg

This is the greatest alarm clock I have ever seen!

These clocks are made to look like the classic NES controllers. They are being sold for a limited time at only $24.99 each. As you can see, the controllers have an LCD screen, but it also has some mini games and if you get certain high scores, it unlocks different alarm sounds. MAN, the 80’s child in me wants one.

Final Fantasy XII

fmvs8.jpg

I’m going today to pre-pay for FFXII!

The Final Fantasy games are my all time favorite games. They are epic, beautiful, and have an amazing storyline.

I am worried about FFXII. The newest game in the series is changed so that it plays more like an MMORPG (massive-multiplayer-online-rpg) as opposed to a regular RPG. But I figure I’ve not played an FF game in 4 years so I can just suck it up and deal with it. The positive note is that FFXIII is back to its roots.

So anyway Oct. 31, you know where I’ll be! NO, not trick or treating, or going to party with Samantha like I do every year. I’ll be picking up my copy of FFXII.

Console Wars

This coming holiday season, gamers get to choose between an X-Box 360, Playstation 3, and Nitendo Wii. One of the biggest factors in the systems are the price tags. The X-box has a watered down version for $299 and a full version for $399. The PS3 is rumored to be $499 and $699 and the Wii at $199.
I’ve decided that I’m going with Wii, but price isn’t the reason. The PS3 is the most powerful system and has a blu-ray dvd drive. The X-box has a HD DVD drive and the WII is the wimpiest system. So why the Wii? The games.
I LOVE rpg’s and I dabble into first person shooters. When the PS3 launches there isn’t a single good game in either genre.  For the X-box, there is only one RPG and its more action-realted.  The Wii is launching with The Legend of Zelda and DAMN this game looks pretty.
Zelda on the NES was the first RPG I ever played and I have been hooked to the genre ever since. Early reviews are saying the newest version of the game is HUGE. Supposedly it takes 45 minutes to ride across the world on a horse and twice that when walking!
Now just because I’m going with the Wii now doesn’t mean I won’t be going with the PS3 or X-box in the future. It just means I’m going to wait until they have games I want. As soon as Final Fantasy XIII comes out I KNOW I’ll be getting a PS3 and the same for Halo 3 on the X-box.

Ultimate Alliance

ultalliance.jpg
JimSmash, one of my favorite blogs to read, posted this:

If you haven't seen yet, check this out - its the trailer for the upcoming video game ULTIMATE ALLIANCE (starring Marvel characters).

Now forget the whole game aspect... Instead of Marvel pumping out lame live-action movies, they should be doing full-length 3D animated movies similar to the look & feel of this. Smooth out the animation, tweak the modeling and amp it up slightly and they'd be golden. With animation, you're not as limited with budgetary constraints and over-priced actors as with live-action. The skies and imagination is the limit! Imagine the Dark Phoenix Saga done this way, but with the art direction looking like Byrne's artwork!! Oh man!!!

Wii for Cheap

wii.jpg

Vice President of EA games, David Gardner, has said that he thinks Nitendo’s new system, Wii, will sell for around $170 US dollars!

"I've heard when in Japan that the North American price is about $170, but I don't know if the price has been set in Europe yet," Gardner said. "They've made a choice which is great for the consumer. Now we're going to have a choice whereby consumers can buy a Wii, plus one other console."

This is crazy. Let me put it in perspective for non gamers. The X-box 360 is at XXXX and the Playstation 3 is expected to be sold for around $600 because of the blu-ray player. For past systems the SNES (“Super Nitendo”) sold for $200 fifteen years ago.

Nitendo has been quiet on announcing a price for Wii and hasn’t even announced a date for when the system will go on sale. The only thing it has said is that Wii will cost less than $250 and that they plan to sell 6 million units by next March.
I have yet to truly decide which game system I'm going to go with, but if the Wii is so cheap, I don't see how I can pass it up.

Virtual Identity Theft

wowc.jpg
Identity theft has grown tremendously over the past few years, but a new version is popping up: Virtual Identity Theft. I’m not joking.
MMORPG’s (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) are games like “World of Warcraft” or “Ever Quest.” People create a character in a fictional world and then live virtually as that character. They can learn skills like weaving, masonry, farming and so on. They can get married or go on quest and fight dragons.
Being me, I’ve tried these games before in the past, but I never liked them. They are too time consuming. They draw you in and if you can’t devote like 10 hours a day you can’t get anywhere in them. It’s like the point of the game is to disconnect you from the real world.
Well computer hackers are now stealing character identities in MMORPG. They are using viruses and spyware to learn passwords. They then go onto character’s and steal everything they own. They steal houses, magic swords, and dragon scale armor. The hackers then use things like EBay or other services to sell these “virtual” items for real money.
Here is a great quote I found in an article on CNN:
"For a lot of the customers out there, there is more store value on their MMO characters than there is on the credit card with which they pay for the account," said Weinstein. "The police are really good at understanding someone stole my credit card and ran up a lot of money. It's a lot harder to get them to buy into 'someone stole my magic sword."'

Itune Movies

iTunes_pirates_w.jpg
While at the moment you'll still need to resort to less than legal methods in order to download Mission Impossible III, word is coming that you'll soon be able to download your indie movie faves from Lions Gate without risking a lawsuit. Studio CEO John Feltheimer recently unveiled that the deals have been reached with CinemaNow, Movielink and iTunes, allowing users to download movies for their portable devices. The iTunes movie download service could likely be launched by the end of this year, with a consortium of studios other than Lions Gate likely to be involved. This could give Vongo some competition, and while both services must have Netflix nervous, it's rumored to be considering a similar delivery strategy as well. And although none of these options are providing high definition content (yet), all this probably isn't being seen as good news for those hardware makers of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players. No word on price or whether or not you'll be renting or buying the videos, but word on the street has been to expect a $9.99 price point on iTunes for movie rentals.

Halo Has a Director

halopic.jpg

Universal and 20th Century Fox have recruited a first-time feature director to oversee the sure-to-be-expensive big screen version of "Halo."

The studios have selected 26-year-old advertising and f/x savant Neill Blomkamp to direct "Halo," setting off a frenzy of online activity as fans of the bestselling Microsoft videogame rushed to sites like Google Video and YouTube.com to track down Blomkamp's collected works.

I’ll be honest. I’ve never heard of the guy. I’m also surprised that the movie studios would back such an unknown with such an expensive and fanboy project.

After doing a little research I figured out that I am familiar with a commercial that Blomkamp filmed. Does anyone remember the semi-recent commercial of a car driving on a frozen lake and it transforms into a giant robot? It was a Citroen ad and he directed it.

I guess this is promising in the sense that he is familiar with using fancy-looking special affects. But that doesn’t mean he can handle developing Master Chief’s character as a bad ass or handling the dramatic aspects of the movie.

A good sign is that Alex Garland, writer and director of “28 days later,” wrote the screenplay that Blomkamp will be filming. Though a part of me wonders why the studios didn’t have Garland direct. At least he has more credibility.

Principal photography for “Halo” will happen sometime next year with a release date of Summer 2008.

E3 is Dead

HOLY CRAP.

E3 is the “Electronic Entertainment Expo” that has been held for the past 12 years in LA. This is the biggest videogame show in the world and where all the big news and announcements come from.

It seems that the major companies: Sony, Nitendo, Microsoft, etc… have all dropped out of the show because next year it is switching to a smaller format.  This is just shocking.

IGN has a full article on it here.

Penny Arcade also has some interesting comments as well as this cartoon (click to enlarge it):
